How Viking and FireFlex Revolutionized Preaction Fire Protection

Prior to 1994, preaction fire protection systems were typically assembled at the construction site. Due to the complexity of identifying the components required to field assemble the unit to meet the system releasing configuration (single interlock, double interlock) and to properly incorporate the mechanical components with an alarm detection system, challenges existed for the fire protection contractor and consulting engineer. The coordination between two contracting disciplines often lead to questions regarding approval issues and time-consuming coordination between alarm contractors, sprinkler contractors and consulting engineers.

In 1994, Viking introduced the “TotalPac” integrated unit provided by FireFlex Systems. The integrated system concept was revolutionary, as it pre-assembled, pre-wired and pre-tested the preaction systems into a single, user-friendly enclosure. Since its inception, the integrated approach has expanded to include Viking Firecycle Systems, dry and wet system risers. As technology evolved, new options were offered to provide cost-saving alternatives (skid mount, remote and self-contained units) and meet the requirements of authorities having jurisdiction, such as seismic bracing and fail-safe preaction (SureFire).

As we have been embarking on 30 years of proven fire protection technology, FireFlex Systems and Viking will continue to develop state-of-the-art technology to meet the needs of evolving new markets.
