Employees at Viking Group were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Richard “Dick” T. Groos, a true pioneer and visionary in the fire sprinkler industry. Richard dedicated over six decades of his life to the Viking Corporation, leaving a significant mark on the organization and the industry as a whole.

Joining the company in 1955, Richard became President of the Viking Corporation in 1961 and served until 1990, when he became CEO of Viking’s parent company, Tyden Group. During his tenure with Viking, Richard was instrumental in shaping the technical landscape of the company. He was the author of numerous technical data pages, registered multiple patents and helped in the development of many products and concepts that helped Viking advance into an industry leader.

Richard was passionate about educating the next generation of fire sprinkler professionals and developed the industry’s first fire sprinkler training seminar at Viking. Many attendees of the initial Viking Seminars were treated to his multiple roles as chauffeur, host and educator.

“Dick’s legacy continues to inspire us at Viking today,” said James Golinveaux, Viking President & CEO. “His commitment to education, coupled with his pioneering spirit, has shaped our company and we continue to walk in his footsteps today. Richard understood the importance of knowledge and skill development, and his passion for empowering others through the best training continues to resonate within our organization today.”

Richard's influence extended beyond the walls of the Viking Corporation. His service on the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) Board of Directors from 1971 to 1982 and as the inaugural chairman of the Manufacturers Council from 1974 to 1976 underscore his commitment to advancing the industry as a whole. He is a recipient of both the NFSA Golden Sprinkler award and the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) Henry S. Parmelee Award, two of the premier awards recognizing those who have made an outstanding impact on the fire sprinkler industry.

We extend our condolences to Richard's family and loved ones. His commitment to family and industry leaves a lasting legacy for generations. Richard's jovial nature and genuine support for his team and community set an example we all can strive to emulate.
