Lithium-Ion Cells and Modules Storage Protection

Written by Viking Group, Inc. | May 7, 2024 7:46:15 PM

Lithium-ion batteries are essential for powering various devices, ranging from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems, thanks to their compact size, high energy density and rechargeability. However, they also pose a significant risk in their susceptibility to overheating, fires and explosions if they are damaged or mishandled. Thermal runaway, which refers to the rapid and uncontrolled release of heat energy from a battery cell, can often trigger severe battery fires. So how do you protect these applications?

Tests have shown that water is the most effective method for suppressing these challenging fires. Although there are no specific approvals or listings for sprinklers designed to protect Lithium-ion cells or modules, Factory Mutual provides guidance on protection in FMDS 8-1 and 8-9, using FM Approved storage sprinklers.

Viking offers FM Approved sprinklers that meet all design requirements in FMDS 8-1.
